Beetles are popular pets amongst boys in Japan. The most popular are large, glossy rhinoceros beetles, called kabutomushi (カブトムシ) in Japanese. I guess, because of the elaborate ornamentation on the front of the head that resembles a samurai's helmet, called a kabuto. For just the right sized samurai, rhinoceros beetle beats horse as choice of mount every time.
