One of my favorite historical, cultural sites is Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto. It's got these seemingly unending rows of torii gates, all painted the same shade of bright orange. Fox statues, stone lanterns, and other shrine paraphenalia are scattered through the tunnels of gates that twist their way deeper and deeper into the mountain. The fox is supposed to be a messenger of the goddess Inari, and capable of shapeshifting and other magic. The older and more magical the fox is, the more tails it can have.
